(Dr. Thanuja Paragoda )

(English version is given below)

මම චිත්‍ර අඳින්න පටන් ගත්ත දා පටන් ඕං මෙයා කං කෙඳිරි ගගා හිටියෙ;

"අනේ මගෙත් චිත්‍රයක් අඳින්නකෝ " කියලා. ඊලඟට;

කියලත් හිතුනා. බැලින්නං මගෙ ඇස් දෙකත් එහෙමයි. පස්සෙ තමයි මට මතක් උනේ;

Welcome!

My loving friend Thanuja Harshani Paragoda is blooming as a wonderful  flower in my portrait collection. I met her in Texas, United States of America. We started our higher education there at the same time (mid of the year 2011). However, I could get to know about her at the end of the same year. That's happened at the time that we practiced a traditional dance for the university talent show. I felt that she is in my style and I knew that we will become good friends one day. The friendship began at that day grew and grew and we became good friends with time. Even through I came from US, we are close friends as always.

She was asking to draw her portrait since the day I started sketching. But, I was postponing it since I was a beginner. She was keep aking and I was keep postponing. At the end she stoped asking. Oh no I should draw her at leat now, right? So, I decided to make a rich portrait of my pretty girl, Thanuja to make her joyful. We did so many things together in those days; we went shopping, had parties, went trip, were chatting. She was with me all the time. She cooked for us when I am sick, I am hungry, when I am tired, or even when I am lazy to cook. All I had to do was ask. She is like a sister to me. She gave me a passionate love. The time I spend with her is awesome. Thus, I trapped her in a charcoal portrait with my maximum strength for all the things that she did for me, still doing for me, will do in the future for me.

Thanuja's heart is remarkably beautiful. She never ever gives trouble to other, instead, she loves to help people. She is always wondering to whom and how should she help others (that's why I am her best friend :)). No matter what, she always tries to make others happy. Oh, what a wonderful person with a strong personality. It's my pleasure that she came to my life to make it smooth, aromatic, colorful, and beautiful. My love, even though you live far away from me, you are so close to me in my heart.

Now, let's talk about this portrait as well. It took quite a long time for me to complete this. But I enjoyed it at each step (steps are given above). The original picture is linked here. I hope I did a great job. Since I drew lots of Asian characters, I felt bit strange while I am sketching this. It was awesome to feel the differences of face features of us (South Asian) and Asians.

Drawing a widely open mouth with teeth is usually a challenge. Because, if a one line in a one side of a one teeth is crooked then the entire mouth looks deformed. I drew a mouth with teeth after a long time, fortunately, it was painless this time.

I learned drawing the neckless and cheeks more naturally. Usually, I use a paint brush (a flat one) to spread the colors. I did it in a way that it follows the curves and bends to preserve the three-dimensional look. Erasing is important as mush as shading. When I am about to finish, I used my eraser to fine tune the lighter and brighter areas.

What do you think about the background? It was created by drawing curls all around with my favorite brush (flat brush) with the charcoal powder that I saved while sharpening the charcoal pensil.

Dhiraj's comment on this portrait.

"Wow, the hair is amazing. It's remarkably natural near the forehead. But, hair looks too neat. Draw some messed up hair near the outer boundary too. It will enhance the natural look."

Thanks, Dhiraj, I will keep that in mind.

Thanuja, I love you a lot. May all your great dreams come true!
